While doing some undercover detective work at a computer retailer in Manhattan earlier this year, a colleague and I were shocked—shocked, I say!—to hear an employee explain that those little notebooks called netbooks were "basically like BlackBerrys". What he meant to say was that, because of their small form-factor and lighter specs, netbooks are auxiliary notebooks best used for web access and performing simple tasks on the go. His words however, implied that a netbook is merely a big ol' cell phone, simply because you can send email or check a few of your favorite websites with it. Scary. Needless to say, some sales associates are better than others. If you're looking for a netbook, start your search by getting the full skinny: what to look for, what specs matter, and which ones don't.
