| Virtualization management takes center stage As virtualization evolves over the next several years, management will play a bigger and bigger role. Storage virtualization aides disaster recovery While most enterprises begin their virtualization foray at the server level, faith-based financial services firm Mennonite Mutual Aid (MMA) came at it from the storage side of the shop. The primary objective was remote disaster recovery, which a growing variety of virtualization capabilities can neatly address. Virtual desktops to the rescue Back in February, while Louisville, Ky., was defrosting after a freak storm buried the city in ice, IT exec Brian Cox was dreaming not of warmer climes but of desktop virtualization. Virtual appliances: Slow on the uptake The idea -- and benefits of -- virtual appliances seem straightforward enough, but IT execs have been slow to adopt the technology. Microsoft, Citrix drop sponsorship of VMworld after dustup with VMware Microsoft and Citrix have decided not to sponsor next week's VMworld virtualization conference and are maintaining only a limited presence at the show due to conflicts with rival VMware. WAN optimization specialist NetEx targets VMware environments As the industry prepares for next week's big VMworld show, one WAN optimization player is highlighting its ability to accelerate a key feature of VMware-virtualized environments. Wyse offers desktop virtualization for the iPhone IPhone and iPod touch devotees can now access their PCs or virtual desktops remotely using PocketCloud from Wyse, released Thursday. EMC adds virtual machine management to Clariion arrays EMC introduced new virtualization-aware capabilities for its Clariion CX4 midrange networked storage systems, which make CX4 software and disaster recovery applications aware of connected virtual machines.
