How to Buy a Netbook I finally took the netbook plunge a couple days ago; picked up a Toshiba mini NB205 and loaded Windows 7 onto it. It's a winning combination that's perfect for surfing the Web and blogging while I'm relaxing on the couch, or going to the park to get some work done in the sunshine. But not all netbooks are created equal. Screen size, keyboard size, battery life, price, and storage capacity vary greatly, and will affect how you use the tiny machine. We'll break down the different options for you and help you pick the right netbook with our netbook buying guide.

WiMax: Why You Want It Now Editor in Chief Lance Ulanoff and Mobile Analyst SaschaSegan are in Korea this week (the south one, not the north one), and are reporting back with fantastical tales of ubiquitous wireless broadband coverage. In this week's column, Lance drools over the connection speeds, but his child-like wonder turns to anger as he considers our chances of ever getting such a network here in the U.S. Twitter Is the New CB Radio Remember CB radio? I had one when I was a kid, though I can't for the life of me remember ever actually having conversations with it. John C. Dvorak thinks the rise of Twitter is much like the rise of CB radio, and that its flameout will look similar, as well. It's a bit macabre to talk of Twitter's demise when the social network is still growing so quickly, but JCD has never shied away from predicting the imminent death of a company. Build It: A Back-to-School PC I'll be straight with you: You can walk into Best Buy today and drop $500 for a computer that will likely be just fine for four years of school. And it'll be about as much fun as picking up the dry cleaning. Instead, why not try building your own PC? It's cheaper and easier than you think. Plus, it'll earn you cred with your dorm mates, and build your character while teaching you valuable life lessons. And isn't that what education is really about? Are Consumers Ready to Spend Again? Great job, PCMag readers! You took our reader survey, and more than half of you said you'll be spending over $1,000 on tech products before the end of the year. 20 percent of you said you'll be spending more than $2,000. The recovering economy thanks you, and Tim Bajarin crunches some numbers in his latest column. Labs Review: HP Pavilion Slimline s5120f Friends ask me all the time what kind of computer they should get. The question for them, as you know, is what they'll be using it for: "Oh, you know, e-mail and Web surfing, maybe some Word files, iTunes, Facebooks". If that's you, save your money and shop on price. You don't need a quad-core PC to access Facebook, and something like HP's Pavilion Slimline s5120f will do the job fine. It's got 4GB of RAM, an AMD Athlon X2 processor, and 500GB of storage for $400. Add a cheapo monitor and you're golden. Sony Unveils Daily Edition E-Book With 3G Wireless Not content to let Amazon's Kindle have all the ebook glory, Sony just yesterday announced the new Daily Edition ebook reader. It looks pretty cool, and will be out for the holidays for $400. And surprisingly (for Sony), the device is moving away from a proprietary ebook format, adopting the open ePub format and allowing users to download content from their local libraries. The full writeup of the device is on PCMag.com , and we've got video of the launch event on Gearlog Hack Your Palm Pre Mobile devices expert Jamie Lendino has uncovered a list of tips, tricks, and hacks that let Palm Pre users get more out of their smartphone. Improving the battery life and enabling homebrew apps is easy and safe; enabling access to your phone's Linux root is a bit more exciting. Check out all the tips and hacks. Jessica Biel Will Destroy Your Computer The lovely Ms. Biel gets the dubious distinction of topping McAfee's list of "Riskiest Celebrities to Search on the Web." I'm going to assume from this that malware distributors think people who search for Jessica Biel aren't computer savvy, and are more open to phishing and social engineering attacks. If you're a big Jessica Biel fan, you should absolutely be offended by this. Labs Review: Western Digital WD ShareSpace Looking for an easy-to-use NAS device? You're in luck: We just named the Western Digital WD ShareSpace our new Editors' Choice! Our labs experts say the box runs cool and quiet, and comes in capacities up to 8TB. That's some of the good stuff we have going on this week in the PCMag Network. We'll update you again on Friday with more cool stories, including one hot review that I can't really talk about yet.
No matter how large or small your business is, you are constantly faced with the challenged of keeping all your computer systems up and running, upgraded and updated. You can try to do it yourself, or you can hand off the work to a distributed device management system that can provide remote Web-based system management, software distribution, and patch management while also protecting your systems from viruses and malware.
As your business grows, it is increasing dependent on its IT systems to run its operations. As a result, your business has become more sensitive to IT security concerns. In order to address these challenges, new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions are emerging that can replace or extend tradition on-premise security products. The savings generated by a SaaS-based solution could reach 50% of total costs.
